Is the 'choppiness' when you play video from websites etc. or when  
playing a dvd? If it's the latter, make sure dma is turned on for  
your dvd drive.

I  find that if I pause online video while it buffers I get much  
better playback. I tend to use mplayer and vlc for video content.
