I cheated, when I did the same thing as you install wise, I moved the XP boot lines to just above the upper AUTOMAGIC comment. That way, it won't be re-witten, and you can set your default back to 1, as the first entry will always be Windows XP, your second will always be the latest kernel for your machine.

Yes, I'm aware that there is an easy fix for this, just in two minds
whether this constitutes a bug - since the upgrade breaks the
configuration, or just an unfortunate 'feature'. I'm sure I could think
of cases where you would want the default to remain the same numerically
in spite of the fact that the previously chosen default has moved down
the list (and that's not including the obvious of putting the new kernel
at the top as is done with the automatic section.

To properly 'fix' this you would have to allow the default line to be
edited even though it falls outside the auto-edit section and have some
means of recording whether the default was below the amended section
and whether extra lines had been added. Debatable as to the benefit.
Maybe this should be a wishlist item. Personally I have no issue, but
thinking as a newbie moving from Windows and experimenting I'd not want
it messed with. That said, I had to manually edit the file to set the
default away from Ubunutu (no boos or hisses please!).
