Yup, Gigabyte do make good boards.  Bear in mind you can't use DDR2 and 
DDR3 memory in the motherboard at once, although as you say it has room 
to upgrade when DDR3 memory gets cheaper (you'll just have to either 
dump or sell the older DDR2 memory).

What exactly do you want to do with the system?
