[ubuntu-uk] Primer on networking - any recommendations

Not of the TCP/IP type networking, but of the smb/nfs variety.
I seem to have got myself into a bit of a pickle with 'folder sharing'
over three boxes, 2 Ubuntu and 1 XP which I've set up, in a fashion,
using the point and click tools. My systems have changed over time and
this set up isn't now right - I don't seem to be able to add a new
folder to be viewable by the other machines or delete existing 'links'.
I'm so ignorant of the subject that I'm struggling even to get the right
terminology out for this begging email, so what I could really do with a
primer so that I can get a better idea of how it should work, then I can
start to ask some sensible questions.
So, anyone got any recommendations, preferably with a Linux bent 'cos my
knowledge of Windows is minimal in this respect.
Thanks in advance.
