I dont think there will be any problems at all. I recently added a cheapo ebay USB2 card to an old server with no USB at all and it worked fine out of the box with Edgy. If you're interested I also added a cheapo no name firewire card to my desktop PC and that worked flawlessly. As you can get combined firewire+USB2 cards from ebay for about £10 maybe this would be a good option?
