This isn't completely true. Beryl runs very well on my laptop + intel
915 onboard graphics card. No noticeable slow down whatsoever, unless
I use the "blur" plugin (which really isn't worth using IMHO).
You don't need a high performance nVidia or ATI card to run
Beryl/Compiz, by any means. IIRC, the first demo videos/development of
Compiz were done on an intel onboard graphics card.
