Well as I'm in the UK and eager to get a good deal on broadband I signed
with TalkTalk and they only supply a USB Sagem 8oo modem so its hooked to
the BT plug.throiugh the usual fliter. I have lernt that Linux does not like
USB to much, is that right?

I tried a router but it cut the speed of my connection to XP on the master
drive from 2.3mbps to 1.0mbps.

Welcome!

What is your physical setup? Are you using a broadband modem or a
router? ADSL or cable? How is it connected to your PC?

Kind regards,

Sam
