[ubuntu-uk] mysql fun on edgy

we had to use edgy since dapper is still very weak in mult-media codecs
on 64 bit.
for w32codes, we had to use some packages from Christian Marillat which
work very well. thus, using debian "unstable" which proved very stable.
however, even on debian sid the mysql works. on the edgy 64 bit it
simply stopped working. And google it, you'll see others with the same
problem.
to get mysql back, I had to alien a redhat 64-bit rpm. that's working
fine, which I can't understand. however, the ubuntu php-5 mysql won't
work with it.
really, this is getting totally silly. I plan to get rid of ubuntu/edgy
and put on debian stable which will work well.
thus, what does a new ubuntu release mean? it doesn't work? should we
regard new non-LTS releases less stable than debian sid?
