Thanks Tristan.

ip route produces:

192.168.1.0/24 dev eth0 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.1.2
default via 192.168.1.1 dev eth0

So I tried:

ping 192.168.1.2 and
ping 192.168.1.1 which both sent 8 packets and rec'd 8 back in a few seconds.

Then I did:

ping 82.211.81.166 and again sent 8 and got 8 back.

This seems to be working fine?
