[ubuntu-uk] APT problem

A couple of months ago one of my computers froze when I was up-dating some
packages - I now get the folowing error messaes when i try to use APT - or
synaptic.

E: Problem parsing dependency Depends
E: Error occurred while processing xchat (NewVersion1)
E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/dpkg/status
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.

Is there any easy soilution to this?

I am using Edubuntu 6.06.
