[Bug 1262990] [NEW] Negative unread counts without rhyme or reason

When I open up chat windows after seeing them in the message bar I see
negative unread counts in the message list.

Screenshot is attached.

Might be related to #1262980 (duplicate entries for chats in the message
list)
