Empathy seems to link with the mapi global adress book in Evolution (from an MS Exchange server 2007/2010). As there are more than 25000 entries in this company addressbook on my system, Empathy seems to "choke" and uses about 800 MB of virtual memory (and takes minutes to start).
After deleting this exchange global adress book (filename mapigal*)  from ~/.cache/evolution/addressbook/ , empathy uses about  20 MB virtual memory and is fast again.
