Nicolò, I think the current behavior can be kept exactly as it is if the
status icon is present (i.e., the option "use message indicators" in the
preferences is unchecked). When the status icon is not present (i.e. the
messaging menu is being used), I think the expected behavior is to
*never* inhibit notifications.
