Thanks for taking time to report this bug and help make ubuntu better.
Can you please respond to the upstream comment or else please try the
development release of empathy from this ppa
https://launchpad.net/~telepathy/+archive/ppa and check if the problem
is still there. (Many problems are fixed in development releases)
