@Detlef, sudo add-apt-repository ppa:telepathy/ppa ;sudo apt-get update
;sudo apt-get dist-upgrade and reboot this will install the development
release of empathy and see if this solves the problem for you.

Empathy is not developed by ubuntu developers its an upstream gnome
project and it was marked incomplete because you were requested to send
the bug upstream and you did not do that or even made a reply after
that. Using the command above will most probably solve the problem for
you. Please let us know if the problem still exists.
