In respect to the error 401, there are two possible errors you can get.
The normal one would be a "407 Proxy Authentication Required", at which
point Empathy should (I think actually does) supply the authentication
header with the next invite. The reason you are getting a 401 rather
than a 407 from your server or proxy may be indicative of an additional
problem. Either the contact field in the invite may be considered
invalid by the server, and this might be related to the use of ephimeral
ports to send messages in empathy sip, or perhaps maybe it is tied to a
failed registration state. In any case, if empathy chooses to treat a
401 not as an opportunity to add an authentication header (and hopefully
it does at least for 407), then yes, it clearly should abandon.
