Thanks for taking the time to report this bug.
Could you try the latest version of empathy (and related packages) from the telepathy ppa (https://launchpad.net/~telepathy/+archive/ppa?field.series_filter=karmic) and confirm this bug still exists for you.
To add the ppa and update empathy open a terminal and type:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:telepathy/ppa && sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
