Thanks for the reply. can you please try the development release of empathy from the telepathy ppa and see if that solves the problem.
first remove all acoounts and quit empathy remove ~/.conf/Empathy ~/.mission-control and ~/.gconf and then add the ppa
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:telepathy/ppa;sudo apt-get update;sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

If that dont work I will send this bug upstream to the ubuntu developers
