indicator-applet-session still uses mission-control-4, karmic is
shipping mission-control-5 (part of the infrastructure empathy uses).
indicator-applet-session is being ported to work with MC5 now.  That
will fix the session state in the applet.  As for the null reference in
the message applet, does that remain after a reboot or logout/login?
Please file that as a bug against indicator-messages.
