Sorry, I am not an advanced user.  Some of this may be incorrect.

~$ aptitude show empathy

Automatically installed: no
Version: 2.27.91.1-2ubuntu2

~$ empathy
Segmentation fault (core dumped)

~$ uname -a
Linux brandon-laptop 2.6.31-9-generic #29-Ubuntu SMP Sun Aug 30 17:39:23 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux
