Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

Empathy will not attempt to connect to accounts in Karmic if the
computer's network connection is a ppp connection, such as a blackberry
tether. Empathy likely only recognizes network connections that are
valid in network manager, which I believe is a bug.
