I'm using non-legacy ssl on 5222 without issue as well.
This page suggests 5222/non-legacy for connecting to Google Talk using
Trillian:

Unfortunately not all of the 'how to connect client X' pages agree on
what's right. It seems that older pages suggest 5223/legacy, and the
pidgin one in particular says that non-legacy SSL "doesn't work", which
is clearly false.
So I'd say Google has updated things and now supports 5222/non-legacy
SSL connections.
