Ubuntu Sugar Remix - 0117 is uploading. Unless something goes wrong, it should be available at http://people.sugarlabs.org/dfarning/ . But, there is a pretty good change that something is going to go wrong...
--End Users--
The most interesting bit is that users can install ubuntu-sugar-remix[1] for Lucid via their favourite package manager. By logging out and logging back in with a Sugar Session they will get the same great user experience as Ubuntu Sugar Remix Live users. (Requested by Jeff)
--Developers--
Ubuntu Sugar remix now uses standard Ubuntu build tools. No more ugly hacks!
New or modified packages are available in the Sugar team PPA at https://launchpad.net/~sugarteam/+archive/ppa/+packages . At the end of the post we have instructions for adding the PPA to you sources.list file.
I have shifted all of my testing virtual machines from Qemu to VirtualBox. While I prefer Qemu, Virtualbox appears more promising for end deployment in the short term. Hope to get in some research about using VirtualBox as a delivery solution this week. (Requested by Caroline)
--Community--
The community is continuing to grow. I am trying to be very customer oriented with this team. After all, Sugar is only useful in the hands of learners. I am going to focus entirely on meeting the needs of partners who are using and contributing back to the project. As such, I would like to encourage users and contributors to share what projects, deployments, schools, and companies with which they are associated.
--Thanks--
Jeff from the Governors Academy. The academy will have student intern starting this week. It looks like he will be working about 4 hours per for the duration of the semester. Jeff has also pledge the money for a student intern over the summer.
Caroline Meeks from Solution Grove is on the look out for a work study student to help out.
(Please note the correlation between the stuff I worked on last week and who got mentioned in the thanks.)
--Call to Action--
Lets get the word out the the Ubuntu Sugar team is 'alive and kicking.' Ok 'alive and twitching' might be more appropriate.
Ubuntu Sugar Team
1. We are using PPAs again so we must make sure that our package manager can find and download files form the correct location. I use
cat << EOF > /etc/apt/sources.list deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid main restricted universe multiverse
deb http:/ppa.launchpad.net/sugarteam/ppa/ubuntu lucid main EOF
cat << EOF > /etc/apt/preferences
Explanation: prefer packages from sugarteam PPA
Package: *
Pin: release o=LP-PPA-sugarteam
Pin-Priority: 1001
EOF
sudo apt-key adv --recv-keys --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com 363C5DAC
