This is a squeak-vm problem, not etoys. Packaging a recent squeak-vm
should solve it.

Binary package hint: etoys

Etoys doesn't work well with compiz enabled. In this case, the program screens gets transparent and you can't see controls well. Running it under metacity makes no such thing.
