Once the upgrade completed and I rebooted, the package manager indicated
that there was one package to upgrade - squeak-vm. I did so and it
upgraded fine. It appears, therefore, that any defect is localized to
the upgrading between 8.10 and 9.04, otherwise package update later
works just fine. Might be worth investigating, but probably not a high
priority item since there is a clear workaround - update and install
after system upgrade.
