Get a new alt-cd. The one you have doesn't install or work properly. The kernel version should be 2.6.31 something. Get it from the Ubuntu Studio Daily Build.
Don't worry about it being a "daily build." Karmic Koala's nearly final. The daily build is now the most stable, not the least.
Google "ubuntu studio daily build" to get it.
It is now VERY UNSTABLE as it has Lucid repositories (which will severely break in the coming days).

What you should do is download the official 9.10 Karmic Koala release that was released two days ago. It's available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntustudio/releases/9.10/release/ or torrent files (which will be faster right now) from http://torrent.ubuntu.com:6969/

Susan, please don't ever tell a new user to get the daily build.

-Eric Hedekar
