[ubuntu-studio-users] latency question

Hello people,

On this machine with ubuntustudio there used to be a notible latency when i
set jack/qjackctl above about 4 msec. But now i was experiencing lot of
more xruns randomly and even with a plop coming through the speakers. Now
that i highered the frames/period to about double i was used to i don't
here any perceptual latency anymore. This is absolutely great and most
xruns are gone but i wander why. Is this because the kernel soft-timer is
set to 1000 Hz? Will this make that much difference for the latency? It
would help me understand a few things if someone could clearify it a bit.
