I don't know about Windows host, for Linux hosts the easiest to use,
perhaps not the best virtual machine is VirtualBox.

I would chose XP home edition for a virtual machine, less work for
maintaining, while there is no need to have the security advantage of
pro.

You can't seriously run audio software for productions by a guest, even
wineasio IMO is not ok, but likely better than a virtual machine running
Windows. But with wineasio expect much MIDI jitter.

Ok, than VirtualBox isn't you choice, but anyway care about the other
notes.
