To build a PC, what hardware to run Ubuntu Studio fast without overspending?

Peter, am not sure my experience'll help but I've run kxstudio 10.04.02
[kubuntu studio] that I credit to falkTx. That was after having built my own
UbuStu 8.04.1; UbuStu 9.04 then 9.10 and having graduated it to UbuStu 10.04
My obj continues to be to cut and splice in-house videos and still photos
for hobby, YouTube or DVD productions. About 12 months back, I threw in a
Gig of Ram on a $205 Mirus P5GC-MX that I picked up on line in Jan 2008. For
a while I tried to hog tie it while I had three SADA hds - 750 gig; 500 gig
and the original 80 gig. The OSs have held their own, you understanding that
an author-mediator-therapist who hobbies along, tends to just doggedly hang
in. Like you, I have asked for help. Can't imagine the thunder you Xpect to
make with an Athlon with 8gigs
At Goodwill over the past month, including today I have seen a bunch of
$99.00 Bare Bones ASUSTek machines all with several Gigs of memory on a
Video card, dual core, neat cooling fans and I believe 6/8 USBs w/out HDs. I
picked up a IMac with a neat 2/3giv video card and today saw a low priced
Dell decked with high performance video cards. I'd say if you look around a
bit, what you awaits you. Have Fun!
