A guy at my LUG uses one of these:

They are cheap, and he says 8 channels are available to Ardour etc.
The downside is that the DACs are only 16bit.
I personally use use an RME 9652 + RME ADI 8-DS because the 24bit DACs
in the ADI are simply awesome.
