I mostly agree with your sentiments, Luke, but I would like to add that  
there are those who will use a Live DVD to do a basic hardware test, just  
to get an idea what works out-of-the-box and what might need some hacking.  
In particular, it's always good to know if your internet connection is  
going to work right away, before you commit to a full install.
