Suemac:  I'm using the same webcam.  Your commands for ffmpeg and 
mplayer work fine.  I tried to fudge in audio, but didn't work.  Will 
have to figure out how to do that.  Looks like the q key in ubuntustudio 
works after all, but command has to be formatted correctly.  Makes sense 
to me.

I have a mic plugged into usb.  But, I think Cheese was using the camera 
mic, if I recall.  I think vlc was picking up audio from usb as well, 
but wouldn't pick up video.  Did your arecord use the webcam mic?
