ubuntustudio webcam question

I've tried to figure out vlc webcam video to file process.  I set my 
video to /dev/video0 and my audio to /dev/dsp1, and result is sound but 
no video.  I only have one video device, but tried with and without the 0.

I'm on Ubuntu 8.04 with ubuntustudio suite added through Synaptic.
