I can't thank you all enough for giving me some ideas to try.
Unfortunately after several more hours of beating my head against the
proverbial "wall" I'm still not getting this to work.
I've tried downloading and installing the latest driver from Nvidia.
However, that keeps giving me an error that no precompiled kernel
interface found. So, I say to download it from Nvidia, but nothing
found. Then it says that no kernel source tree found. However, I've
installed the kernel sources, kernel dev etc.
So, I go back to messing with the driver on the system already. I
modify the xorg.conf to look like so:

The only problem I see is that it is not getting the EDID info from
the monitor (it is an IBM ThinkVision L180p). So, I added the Option
"UseEDID" "False" to the xorg.conf. No change again. Still I see
problems that there are no valid modes. So, I think it is because the
monitor is plugged into a KVM and I directly attach it to the PC. No
change.
I'm baffled and at my wits end. So, I beg for your help as my brain is
mush and I'm not sure what else to do at this time, but I'm still in
this for the long haul and know that come h3ll or high water I'm going
to get this working.
