Sure. Use OpenOffice word processor. 
Use Kdissert or Basket to make notes / outline. 
If you want to enter a LOT of text fast, look up how to make Dragon NaturallySpeaking 9.0 Preferred run using WINE. I use it all the time. 
Directions are in the WINE Apps database. (Warning: DNS 9.5 Standard does NOT run yet.)
