many problems after upgrade to Hardy

I wrote:

It's booting again.  I ran dist-upgrade:

No packages will be installed, upgraded, or removed.
0 packages upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

So I'm back to where I was.  When I did the initial upgrade, it aborted
right at the end and warned me I may have an unstable system.   What now?
