Haha... I'm definitely not belittling digital. As you say, I am on
this list after all. You're absolutely right, that recording had
everything to do with chemistry! What I'm saying is that the limiting
factors (noise floor, track count, time, budget, etc.) are no match
for good source material and creative drive; in fact, various limits
or pressures will often spark creativity that would not have existed
otherwise. So the format doesn't matter, it's a matter of taste (I've
heard this somewhere before...). I for one will be using UbuntuStudio
to achieve a hybrid approach... tracking and editing done in Ardour,
but doing a large portion of the mixing and processing on vintage
outboard gear... with the option to bounce to and from 1/4" or 1/2"
tape of course. Best of both worlds, with the option of staying
entirely in one world or the other if the project so dictates.
That is, I'll be doing all of this as soon as I chase down a minor
ground issue, and wire up my second patchbay.
