cd/dvd-burning very slow

Hello all,

I've recently upgraded from 7.10 to 8.04, and since then, my CD/DVD-burning
has become achingly slow. Whether I create an ISO or burn straight to disc,
creating a checksum takes ages, and burning to disc happens at 1x regardless
of using brasero or nautilus. Apart from this, every other app on my box
slows to a crawl. Sometimes I have to wait for the things I typed into VIM
to appear on my screen.
Should I choose the generic kernel? I don't know what's happening.
