The first thing I would do would be to check that the mic capture is
working in jack. Connect the jack soundcard input to the soundcard
output and see if you hear anything (using headphones to avoid
feedback) and/or connect the soundcard to Meterbridge (I think this is
installed by default in ubuntustudio, but I'm not sure).

If it doesn't work then you might do well to fiddle about in the
qjackctl setup panel and/or with an audio mixer; alsamixergui is
probably a good bet, but you might get more mileage out of gamix (you
would need to install it first) if alsamixergui doesn't do the job. I
have had trouble with the mic input on my audigy2 card, but not the
same trouble on all kernels, so if absolutely nothing works there
might just be a problem with the alsa driver for your card.

Once you have your mic capture working then you can be confident that
there is either a problem with the way you are using ardour or (but
this is very unlikely) a problem with ardour itself.
