thank you mark for all that, very much appriciated, now i have somewhere
to start, and have been pointed in the right direction, UbuntuStudio
would have to be the best os for doing this stuff next to Apple, my
first try at recording was on a apple but my mate had all the gear and
some very impressive application to use it with. 

I have checked out the mic as you suggested and looking for mixer as
well, 
glad to be part of a good community
