When you upgrade from 32 to 64 it's better do with a clean and brand new 
installation, I think. Leap is so much bigger than from one 32-bit 
version to other.

Problem is not open source programs, you can easy teach yourself to 
compile - if you have to.

Problem is closed formats (Flash, Shockwave, wmv, realmedia...) and 
32-bit Firefox with all it's plugins.

It is possible to make room for 32-bit FF inside of 64-bit Ubuntu.

IMHO - go for 64-bit Ubuntu Studio and don't look back for 32-bit world. 
I bet you can live with that. Do not mess with mixed worlds. If you find 
that world unfamiliar, then go back to the 32-bit world - but choose 
only one at time - it is much easier.
