Hi List,
I'm very happy with what has happened to the graphics workflow. And i
think it could become even better. At the moment, in the graphics
utilities there is only "scanning".
I would like to propose the following changes:
*Utilities*
_ImageMagick & ImageMagick (without icon)_
I believe this is a package that used by other packages, unless my
memory fails me, php will use imagemagick to edit images on server. At
the moment, nothing happens when i start them from the menu. On my 14.04
they give a funky and rather uninteresting windows with limited or
obscure possibilities. If it really has to be accessible to the user, i
think they would fit in Graphics->Utilities
_Agave_
is also a Utility. It's an app for color mixing.
_Ristretto_
While it is very handy, in most situations it generally invoked from a
file-manager by opening an image-file. To me it can stay where it is,
but it is not an editor. However, it is also present in
"graphics->photography" which i believe is the most logical place.
_Font Manager_ Is probably also a utility. It does what it says: manage
fonts. I think it was investigated how it could be used to ship the
system with all currently distributed freefonts, while having a large
part of them deactivated to optimize start-up for the apps using the
font collection. If i recall correct, no solution was found. I will try
to talk to the devs of it directly see if they something.
*Software version*
Yesterday, while checking what versions are included in ubuntustudio
against the latest available version on the website, i found this
recommendation on the GIMP website called SwatchBooker:
http://www.selapa.net/swatchbooker/
It's an app much like agave, but also for print. According to gimp, it
is a /Key Component in a Desktop Publishing Workflow/ and i must say i
have missed such an app.
I also noticed that there has been lots of effort put down to FontForge
with a complete revamp of the GUI and much improvements and squashed
bugs. And it would be great to have the latest and greatest possible for
the LTS :)
As you may know, i am still a complete n00b as to how to fix or achieve
this, so please be patient with me, while resting assured i'm more then
willing to get my hands dirty. I will try to commit myself to spend
minimum 8 hours every non-Holiday Thursday to work with you on Ubuntu
Studio, but will be available much more than that to interact with you
here on the list, on IRC and to help out with the PR-team.
Wishing you all a great week!
