It is one of those things that once you get used to it.... it always gets
set (where's focus follows mind please?) But those who are used to it
probably know how to change it.

I think this will be left as is.

I personally think this is something that is easy to turn on by someone
who wants it while being confusing to those who who are not used to
searching through settings. I have seen "non-power users" restart a second
version of the same app in this case.

That seems to be the sense I get too. So refining it is the thing to do. I
think it is possible to confine the active area to just where the icons
are. I do find both on my desktop and laptop that verticle space is more
useful than horizontal space. I prefer to have the "B" panel (actually
panel 1) on the side of the screen like unity. In my case I also like to
have it there all the time and not hide so that the windows draw excluding
that space.

On further thought, there is no reason to remove the desktop icons. I may
not find them useful, but they do not make my work harder as I can ignore
them. It would be very easy to say that you can just as easy add custom
stuff to your second panel, but choice is good and I am looking for
conflicts with easy workflow, not making people use what I use.
