Easy fix - /etc/lightdm/lightdm-gtk-greeter-ubuntu.conf has a line:

background=/usr/share/backgrounds/warty-final-ubuntu.png
The file doesn't exist... changed it to:
background=/usr/share/backgrounds/ubuntustudio-ayo.png
Works fine. Not sure if that is the right image to use, but at least I
know why.

Firefox doesn't know where to find plugins, do I need to add another site
to apt?
