I can confirm that the Noble debdiff matches the v88 version that was
uploaded to Oracular and also matches the release/core88 upstream branch
(plus the Debian/Ubuntu additions in debian/)
So this is essentially a full-version backport from Oracular
(1:0~88.12113-gitd7d581b7-0ubuntu1) to Noble, which also happens to
change the versioning scheme. I think the new versioning scheme is
sensible. But the fact that this is a full-version backport wasn't very
clear to me, at first. (It would be nice to have this clearly stated in
debian/changelog)
I couldn't find any SRU exception for backport-iwlwifi-dkms, and I'm unclear of how it would match the SRU policy. But I see precedence of full-version backports to Jammy/Focal/Bionic. So I'll leave it to the SRU team to make a call about accepting/rejecting it from the queue.
Otherwise, lgtm and I've sponsored it to Noble and unsubscribed ~ubuntu-
sponsors.

Title:
migrate to upstream release/coreNN branch
Status in backport-iwlwifi-dkms package in Ubuntu:
Fix Released
Status in backport-iwlwifi-dkms source package in Noble:
In Progress
Status in backport-iwlwifi-dkms source package in Oracular:
Fix Released
Bug description:
[SRU Justification]
[Impact]
To migrate the a version scheme that is well-known to all parties.
[Fix]
Update debian upstream version to 1:0~NN.ddddd-git<hash>. Also based
on the upstream release/core88 HEAD at the time.
[Test Case]
1. install kernel headers packages. This should include kernel headers for generic-6.8, oem-6.8, linux-azure, linux-lowlatency according to kernel-versions dkms map
2. install backport-iwlwifi-dkms from -proposed and trigger dkms builds
[Where problems could occur]
iwlwifi dkms provides backward compatibility, but new features may
still depend on new firmware, which may not be available unless SRU-ed
back to noble.
[Other Info]
For Jammy, we will have oem-6.8 and hwe-6.8 soon, but no further plan
for 6.10 kernels. Currently it has nothing depending on a new iwlwifi
dkms release, so it will be skipped from this SRU, leaving only Noble
as the target.
========== original bug report ==========
In the past we're tracking the upstream master branch and create new
builds upon the lastest HEAD available at the moment. This, however,
creates ambiguity for tracking backport-iwlwifi development &
releases, because the upstream puts more emphasis on the coreNN
releases instead of the development branch master when investigating
support of new hardware models.
Currently backport-iwlwifi-dkms/noble, versioned 11510-0ubuntu1, is
built from upstream revision 11520, which maps to upstream git commit
41e354fb5f32 that is a few commits behind the release/core84 HEAD
commit 6d8764841123 (revision 11517). To migrate to release/core84
branches, it follows we will have to rebase our work to release/core84
HEAD and to fix debian version with an additional epoch. The proposed
new version nubmer is 1:84.<rev>-git<hash>-0ubuntu1.
