I think that's unrelated, but I'm not sure. I filed Debian bug #838001
for this, with my patch, and linked it here.

Title:
  cryptsetup does not support ZFS

Status in cryptsetup package in Ubuntu:
  New
Status in cryptsetup package in Debian:
  Unknown

Bug description:
  cryptsetup does not currently support ZFS.

  For example, this happens on 16.04:
  $ sudo update-initramfs -c -k all
  update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-4.4.0-34-generic
  cryptsetup: WARNING: could not determine root device from /etc/fstab
  update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-4.4.0-31-generic
  cryptsetup: WARNING: could not determine root device from /etc/fstab

  The attached patch adds ZFS support to cryptsetup.
