@jbicha are you planning on uploading the changes that remove libjasper-
dev from the list of dependencies? Would be nice to have that land in
yakkety so we can demote jasper to universe.

Title:
Don't build-depend or depend on jasper

Status in imagemagick package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  1. The current version of imagemagick in Ubuntu since at least 15.04
(!) no longer supports jasper for JPEG2000 support but support
openjpeg2 instead. See bug 1447968 . In other words, the current
  dependency on jasper does nothing.

  2. jasper will be removed from Debian really soon because it has been
  abandoned upstream for a while.

  https://release.debian.org/transitions/html/jasper-rm.html

  3. From what I can tell, imagemagick is the last thing keeping jasper
in Ubuntu main. openjpeg2 is not in main yet, see bug 711061 .
Interestingly, jasper apparently was never explicitly reviewed for
inclusion in main and probably would not have been allowed in main had
a review happened any time recently.

I'm attaching a debdiff for sponsoring to remove the useless jasper
  dependency. Thanks!

For removing jasper from Ubuntu completely, see bug 1612835 .
