I suspect you're going to have a problem with your image format not being quite right:

$ identify data/vivid/ubuntu.png
data/vivid/ubuntu.png PNG 639x320 639x320+0+0 8-bit sRGB 17.3KB 0.000u 0:00.000
$ identify data/vivid/ubuntu-mate.png
data/vivid/ubuntu-mate.png PNG 640x480 640x480+0+0 8-bit sRGB 9.7KB 0.000u 0:00.000

(Note that this is a different size from the corresponding .pcx.  Sorry.)

But you can always clean that up later.
