The unity8-desktop-session package provides a Unity8 Desktop Preview
login session that runs on the Mir system compositor.  The purpose is to
provide a convenient way to test and evaluate upcoming converged Unity
functionality on desktop form factors.

The binary package(s) provide appropriate configuration scripts and pull
in dependencies to make running Unity8 on the desktop as easy as
installing a single package and just logging in.

Notes: The Unity8 environment currently has limited support for desktop applications.  That's part of the purpose of this package: an easy-to-use environment to get their apps working with Unity8.
