Hum... how about the bundled .jar files? Could they be replaced with
symlinks to system versions or (if not available) be built from source?

I know this massively complicates things, but it'd be good to know which
parts come from where and why they're bundled. I guess the archive
admins are going to ask the same thing.

  development is quite stable and active.
